to give you the last question, before we go to mike emanuel. >> i have a civilized question for mr. henry. >> and civilized-- >> my goodness, bob. >> it sounds worse than the negotiations on the hill. >> it's worse, thank goodness this wasn't our situation to try and strike a deal, it would be hopeless. if a deal is struck, how much will the deficit be redied, what kind of numbers are we talking about? >> it would be minuscule. where you'd see the biggest short-term impact would be if you eliminate all of the bush tax rates and they go back to the clinton rates. the government would be bringing in more revenue, but that's going to take some time. that's not going to happen immediately and it's a relatively small amount in terms of what the government is spending every single day. that money would be spent pretty quickly. so, again, because we're now at this point where this is just a short-term deal, any of the major entitlement reforms that would actually bring major spending cuts are sngsly off the table right now. so, to answer your question directly without pointing a finger at either

correspondent mike emanuel is live on capitol hill where it probably feels like groundhog day to him too. what haw hearing, any progress on the fiscal cliff thing? >> we are all watching and waiting to hear as the senate goes back into session any moment now. everybody i've talked to in recent hours says there are signs of progress, there's optimism, but as one key republican senator told me a few minutes ago, it will come down to those pesky details. vice president joe biden and senate minority leader mitch mcconnell the republican leader have been the key figures in these negotiations after talks stalled over the weekend between mcconnell and senate majority leader harry reid. mcconnell says he and the vice president spoke last night at 12:45, again at 6:30 this morning. mcconnell explained why he reached out to his former senate colleague mr. biden. >> i also placed a call to the vice president to see if he could help jump start the negotiations on his side. the vice president and i have worked together on solutions before, and i believe we can again. >> obviously we were watching to see wh

spokesman offering hope. mike tobin has the latest from houston. >> reporter: the latest release includes a phrase continues to improve in association with the former president's condition. the staff around former president bush made an effort to be lighthearted with the releases and optimistic, acknowledging he's pretty sick and he's 88. he's in the intensive care unit for a stubborn fever brought on as a complication with bronchitis that caused him to be hospitalized back toward the end of november. the staff around him is being jewish in terms of information they're giving out in part because he's so beloved that people will overreact if they get information. we do know from the staff he has been conversational with the nursing staff that is around him. if you ever had an opportunity to cover this president, particularly since his term ended, he's a funny guy, a stitch a minute. consistent with his personalty he's cracking jokes with the hospital staff but he's taking it further and singing with the hospital staff. you can interpret that as a good sign all the while taking into conside

channel mike seidel has made his way from oklahoma to upstate new york. hey, mike. >> reporter: that's right. we've been following my travels on the air with you on msnbc. in buffalo we picked up 11 inches, ending the snow drought and going into the storm, they only had 6 inches, and that said, they ended in good shape. it fell from 1:00 yesterday afternoon to 1:00 this morning and free and clear in new york. they used a lot of salt and a lot of plowing. they don't mess around up here. we still have issues today. talking about the outsider rondex. northern new england gets slammed with 12-18 inches of snow. burlington, the western suburbs of boston and loganton all wind and bangor, where the winds condition. checking laguardia and newark delays, about an hour to hour and a half. we still have a lot of cancellations today, upwards of 600. yesterday, we had over 1700 cancellations. things are improving slowly at the airports as snow winds down in buffalo. next system due in saturday, looking like a much weaker event especially in the northeast. maybe 1-3 inch in philly and new york cit
